4.6

Nestled atop a hill in Rock Island, Illinois, the Hauberg Estate stands as a testament to early 20th-century Prairie School architecture and landscape design. Constructed in 1909 and completed in 1911, the estate, originally known as the Great House, was built for Susanne Denkmann, heiress to a lumber empire. She later married John Hauberg, a Rock Island lawyer, and together they transformed the estate into a hub of civic engagement and philanthropy. The mansion itself is an architectural masterpiece designed by Robert C. Spencer and Horace S. Powers, contemporaries of Frank Lloyd Wright. The design incorporates Mrs. Hauberg's favorite flower, the tulip, throughout the interior and exterior. Landscape architect Jens Jensen designed the grounds to resemble a native woodland, complete with ponds and a waterfall. Today, the Friends of Hauberg Civic Center Foundation manage the estate, offering tours, events, and venue rentals. Visitors can explore the mansion's historic rooms, stroll through the gardens, and learn about the Hauberg family's legacy. The recently renovated Carriage House features a bar, gift shop, and event space, adding another dimension to the visitor experience. The Hauberg Estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a local landmark. It serves as a cultural and architectural icon in the Quad Cities, hosting weddings, business meetings, community programs, and other celebrations.
