Discover more about Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices State Historic Site

The Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices State Historic Site, located in Springfield, Illinois, offers a glimpse into the professional life of Abraham Lincoln during his formative years as a lawyer. From 1843 to about 1852, Lincoln practiced law in this building, partnering first with Stephen T. Logan and later with William H. Herndon. The site is the only remaining building in which Abraham Lincoln maintained a law office. The building itself is a historic brick structure, originally built in 1840-41 as part of the Tinsley Block. The exterior reflects the Greek Revival architectural style popular at the time. The building housed not only law offices but also a federal courtroom and a post office. Today, the site has been restored to resemble its 1840s appearance, with recreations of the law offices and courtroom. Visitors can take a guided tour of the historic rooms, which includes an orientation video. Exhibits in the visitor center provide information on Lincoln's legal career and his life on the Eighth Judicial Circuit. The recreated offices are notable for their plainness and the disorder that Lincoln's associates remembered.
