The Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history and culture of African Americans in Central Illinois. Founded in 2012, the museum has grown from an oral history project into a vital institution that shares authentic stories of African American life, both past and present. The museum's exhibits cover a range of topics, including the presence of quasi-legal slavery in pioneer Springfield, the founding of the free village of New Philadelphia, and the construction of the Lincoln Colored Old Folks and Orphans Home. Visitors can explore exhibits on local families, the 1908 race riot, and the contributions of African Americans to baseball. The museum also features exhibits on the Middle Passage, Barack Obama, and early African American pioneers. The museum is committed to providing research opportunities, educational programming, and interpretive services for those interested in the lives and legacies of African Americans in Central Illinois. It also collects and preserves oral histories from Central Illinoisans. **Please note:** As of July 2025, the museum is temporarily closed for expansion and is scheduled to reopen in late summer or early fall of 2025.
