Old Rail Trail (Whitegates, Athlone)

Explore Ireland's Hidden Heartlands on this scenic 43km off-road trail from Athlone to Mullingar, following the path of the old Great Western Railway.

4.6

The Old Rail Trail Greenway offers a journey through the heart of Ireland, stretching 43km from Athlone to Mullingar. This converted section of the Midlands Great Western Railway provides a safe, off-road path for walkers and cyclists of all ages and abilities. Opened in 1851, the railway line played a vital role in connecting Dublin with Galway and Sligo. However, with the development of the road network, the line closed in 1987. In 2013, Westmeath County Council decided to transform the disused railway into a greenway, preserving a piece of history while creating a valuable amenity for locals and tourists. The trail passes restored station houses and impressive stone-arched bridges, showcasing the area's rich heritage. Along the way, you'll encounter diverse landscapes, from fertile farmland to areas of unique biodiversity. Points of interest include Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park in Moate, a community park with ecology, play, heritage, arts, and education. The trail also connects seamlessly with the Royal Canal Greenway in Mullingar, extending your journey further. The Old Rail Trail is more than just a scenic route; it's a chance to experience the peace and tranquility of rural Ireland, with only the sounds of birdsong and the gentle whir of bicycle spokes to accompany you.
