The Church of Saints Peter and Paul, located on the west bank of the River Shannon in Athlone, County Westmeath, is a prominent Roman Catholic parish church and a significant landmark in the town. This basilica-scale church stands directly opposite Athlone Castle. Constructed between 1932 and 1939, the church was designed by Irish architect Ralph Byrne in a Baroque Revival style. Its neoclassical facade features twin towers flanking a pedimented entrance, built with Portland stone, ashlar limestone, and copper detailing. The spacious nave and altar are adorned with intricate marble work and cast iron elements. One of the most captivating features is its extraordinary stained glass windows. These were designed and created in the Harry Clarke workshop, under the direction of Richard King, one of Clarke's most talented apprentices. The windows depict religious themes, including Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Patrick, the Last Judgment, and Purgatory. These intricate designs draw visitors into a world of spiritual and artistic wonder. The church is part of the Ss. Peter and Paul Parish, one of the most easterly parishes of the Diocese of Elphin. The parish includes Athlone West and surrounding areas in County Roscommon.
