Chiesa Rupestre di San Falcione: A Matera Cave Church

The Chiesa Rupestre di San Falcione, nestled in the Murgia Materana Park, offers a glimpse into Matera's ancient past. Also known as San Canio or San Canione, this rock-hewn church dates back to the 9th century and is one of the oldest rupestrian churches in the area. The church's construction is carved into the calcarenite rock, typical of the region. Inside, the church reveals a rectangular layout with two presbyters, showcasing the influence of Byzantine architecture. Traces of frescoes, though faded, depict saints and scenes such as the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. A Greek inscription, now barely visible, translates to "This child created Heaven and Earth," further attesting to the church's Byzantine origins. The church may have been used to celebrate the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. Over the centuries, the site has served various purposes. In the 1800s, the Counts Gattini used the cave complex as a sheepfold, adding a perimeter wall. Today, the Chiesa Rupestre di San Falcione stands as a reminder of the blend of faith and resourcefulness that shaped Matera's cultural landscape.
