Getting There

  • Car

    From Domodossola, drive along SS33 towards Macugnaga. Follow signs for 'Alpe Pedriola'. Park in the designated area near Alpe Pedriola. From the parking area, hike approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to Rifugio Zamboni Zappa. The path is well-marked. Expect to pay for parking near Alpe Pedriola. Parking fees can vary, but a daily rate may apply.

  • Chairlift & Walking

    From Macugnaga-Pecetto, take the chairlift towards Belvedere. From the chairlift's arrival point (1900m), follow the well-marked trail, crossing the glacier, for approximately 45 minutes to reach Rifugio Zamboni Zappa. Chairlift tickets cost approximately €21 for adults, €19 for seniors (over 65) and groups (20+), and €12 for juniors (4-14). A family ticket (1 adult + 1 junior) is also available.

  • Walking

    From Pecetto, follow the trail towards Alpe Burki and Rifugio CAI Saronno. Continue to Belvedere (1914 m). From Belvedere, take the path that ascends slightly to the left towards the glacier's moraine. Cross the glacier, following the signs, and continue on the path to Rifugio Zamboni-Zappa. The total hike from Pecetto to Rifugio Zamboni-Zappa is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.

Rifugio Zamboni Zappa, situated at 2070 meters in the picturesque Alpe Pedriola near Macugnaga, Italy, provides a unique experience for those seeking natural beauty and outdoor activities. The rifugio's history dates back to 1925 when the Società Escursionisti Milanesi (SEM) built the Rifugio Zamboni. In 1954, they added the Rifugio Zappa to accommodate the increasing number of visitors. The combined structure was then dedicated to Rodolfo Zamboni and Mario Zappa. Celebrations were held in 2024 to mark the centennial of Rifugio Zamboni and the 70th anniversary of Rifugio Zappa. The Alpe Pedriola meadows feature a stream and moraines from the glacier. Erratics dot the landscape, offering bouldering opportunities. Visitors may spot marmots and chamois in their natural habitat. The Nordern Glacier is also nearby.
