Discover more about Matsunoo-taisha (Matsuo-taisha) Shrine

Matsunoo-taisha Shrine, also known as Matsuo-taisha, is a significant Shinto shrine located in the Nishikyo Ward of Kyoto, near Arashiyama. Founded in 701 by the Hata clan, it is one of the oldest shrines in the Kyoto area. The Hata clan, who migrated from Korea in the 5th century, were instrumental in establishing sake brewing techniques in Japan, forging a lasting connection between the shrine and sake production. The shrine is dedicated to the deity of water, Oyamagui-no-Kami, worshipped since ancient times on Mount Matsuo. The sacred Kame-no-I (Tortoise Well) within the shrine grounds is believed to possess pure water that prevents sake spoilage, attracting sake brewers who seek its blessings. The shrine is also associated with good health and longevity, symbolized by numerous tortoise statues throughout the grounds. The Shofu-en Gardens, designed by Mirei Shigemori in 1975, are a highlight of Matsunoo-taisha. These gardens include the Joko-no-niwa (Prehistoric Garden), the Horai-no-niwa (Garden of Horai), and the Kyokusui-no-niwa (Garden of the Winding Stream), each representing different historical periods and concepts. The inner shrine, dating back to 1397, showcases the unique Matsuo-zukuri architectural style and is designated as an important cultural asset. Throughout the year, Matsunoo-taisha hosts various festivals and events, including the Matsuo Festival in April and the Hassaku Festival in September. These festivals offer visitors a chance to experience traditional Japanese culture and witness unique ceremonies such as the Funatogyo, where a portable shrine is carried across the Katsura River.
