Discover more about Kagoshima (Tsurumaru) Castle Ruins

Kagoshima Castle, also known as Tsurumaru Castle, served as the stronghold of the Shimazu clan, who ruled the Satsuma Domain for centuries. Construction began in 1601 under Shimazu Iehisa, and the castle played a crucial role in the region's defense network. Unlike many Japanese castles, Tsurumaru Castle lacked a traditional castle tower, reflecting the Shimazu clan's philosophy of prioritizing people over fortifications. While the main structures were lost to fire in 1873, the remaining stone walls and moats evoke the castle's former grandeur. In 2020, the Goromon Gate, the largest castle gate in Japan, was reconstructed, offering visitors a tangible connection to the castle's past. The castle grounds now house the Reimeikan Museum, which showcases Kagoshima's history and cultural heritage. Located at the base of Mount Shiroyama, the castle ruins provide scenic views of Kagoshima City and Kagoshima Bay. The site is particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season (late March to early April). Exploring the ruins offers a chance to reflect on the Shimazu clan's influence and the castle's significance in shaping Kagoshima's identity.
