The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, located in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, is a world-renowned institution dedicated to dinosaur research and education. As one of the largest paleontological museums in Japan, it draws visitors from across the globe to explore its extensive exhibits and learn about the prehistoric world. The museum's location in Katsuyama is significant, as the city is a center for dinosaur research in Japan and home to the country's largest and most productive excavation site. Since opening in 2000, the museum has welcomed millions of visitors, eager to explore its three main zones: Dinosaur World, Earth Sciences, and History of Life. The Dinosaur World exhibition is a highlight, showcasing over 50 dinosaur skeletons in a vast open space. Visitors can marvel at the Fukui-raptor and Fukui-saurus, species discovered locally, as well as life-size animatronic dinosaurs, including a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The Earth Sciences exhibition offers hands-on displays and videos to educate visitors about the planet's formation and the origins of life. The History of Life corner traces the evolution of living organisms, from single-celled organisms to the emergence of mankind, with a special focus on the dinosaur-to-bird evolutionary link. In addition to the main exhibits, the museum features a hands-on zone where visitors can handle real fossils and a research laboratory where scientists can be observed cleaning and studying fossils. A movie theater, restaurant, and museum shop provide further amenities, while outdoor dinosaur models enhance the visitor experience. For a more immersive experience, visitors can take a dedicated bus tour to the Outdoor Dinosaur Museum, where they can observe dinosaur fossils in mid-excavation and participate in hands-on workshops. The museum underwent renovations in 2023, adding a new annex with a storage room for archaeological artifacts, a special exhibition hall with a three-screen theater, and the Dinosaur Tower, an art installation showcasing dinosaur species discovered in Fukui.
