Discover more about Yokohama Kuan Ti Miao

Located in the heart of Yokohama's bustling Chinatown, Kuan Ti Miao (also called Kanteibyo) is a Taoist temple dedicated to Guan Yu, a famous general deified as the God of War, loyalty, and prosperity. The temple's history reflects the story of Yokohama's Chinese immigrant community, who established the first temple in 1862. The original structure has been rebuilt several times due to disasters. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, air raids during World War II, and fires in 1986 each led to its destruction and subsequent reconstruction. The current temple, inaugurated on August 14, 1990, is the fourth iteration. Many components and craftsmen were brought from China for its construction. Dragon marble slabs were shipped from Beijing, and colorful dragon cornices were crafted in Taiwan. Inside, visitors can admire the ornate architecture and various deities. The main hall features a large statue of Guan Yu, easily recognized by his red face, a symbol of integrity, strength and courage. Other important figures include the Jade Emperor, the monarch of all deities, and Di Mu Niang Niang, the Earth Mother Goddess. The temple also features divine guardians such as Zhou Cang and Guan Ping. Kuan Ti Miao is not only a place of worship but also a center for cultural events. The temple hosts vibrant festivals throughout the year, most notably the Chinese New Year celebrations, featuring lion and dragon dances and traditional performances. Visitors can purchase Chinese incense and gold offering paper at the information center and receive assistance with worship practices.
