If you're driving, start by getting onto the Yamagata Expressway from your location in Tohoku. Follow the signs towards Yamagata City. Once you reach Yamagata, take the exit for Yamadera. Continue on Route 48 and follow the signs for Rissyakuji Temple (Yamadera). The temple parking area is available nearby, but be aware that it may fill up quickly during peak tourist seasons. Parking is generally free.

Train
To reach Rissyakuji Temple via public transportation, take the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Yamagata Station. From Yamagata Station, transfer to the local JR Senzan Line and take a train towards Sakunami. Get off at Yamadera Station, which is about a 15-minute ride. Once you arrive at Yamadera Station, follow the signs to the temple, which is a 20-minute walk uphill. Be prepared for a bit of a hike as you ascend to the temple. The train fare from Yamagata Station to Yamadera Station is approximately 400 yen.

Alternatively, from Yamagata Station, you can take an express bus to Yamadera. The bus ride takes around 30 minutes and costs about 600 yen. Upon arrival at the Yamadera bus stop, you will find signs directing you to Rissyakuji Temple, which is about a 10-minute walk from the bus stop. Buses may have limited schedules, so be sure to check the timetable ahead of time.
