Car
From Zao Onsen, drive south on Route 13 for approximately 30 minutes. Follow the signs for Yamagata City. Once you reach Yamagata City, turn left onto Route 112 towards Kajomachi. Continue for about 5 minutes until you see signs for Yamagata Castle Ruins. There is free parking available nearby.

Public Transportation (Bus)
From Zao Onsen, take the Zao Onsen Line bus to Yamagata Station (approximately 30 minutes). Once at Yamagata Station, exit the bus and catch the Yamagata City Loop Bus (Yamako) bound for Kajomachi. The bus ride will take about 10 minutes. Get off at the 'Yamagata Castle Ruins' stop. The castle ruins are a short walk from the bus stop.

Public Transportation (Train and Bus)
From Zao Onsen, take the Zao Onsen Line bus to Yamagata Station (approximately 30 minutes). Then, from Yamagata Station, take the JR Ou Main Line train to Yamagata Station (this is a transfer but typically does not incur additional cost if you have a valid ticket). After reaching Yamagata Station, board the Yamagata City Loop Bus (Yamako) towards Kajomachi. Get off at the 'Yamagata Castle Ruins' stop. The castle ruins are a short walk from the bus stop.
