Discover more about Pulverturm

The Pulverturm, a stout circular tower, stands at the westernmost point of Lindau Island, guarding the entrance to the harbor. Constructed in 1508 as part of the town's fortifications, it initially served as a defense tower. In 1629, its tent roof was lowered to make it less vulnerable to attack, a decision that proved successful during the Thirty Years' War. Later, in the late 18th century, the tower was repurposed as a powder magazine for the Lindau militia, hence its name. At the turn of the 20th century, the tower was transformed into a summer residence for Lindau's mayor, Dr. Heinrich Schützinger. Architect Friedrich von Thiersch oversaw the conversion, adding living space and a staircase within the tower's two-meter thick walls. Today, the Pulverturm is owned by the Lindau public utility company and is available for rent for conferences and celebrations. Though visitors cannot enter the tower, its exterior provides a glimpse into Lindau's history. The surrounding park offers a tranquil setting to admire the tower and enjoy views of Lake Constance.
