Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, start from the town of Bar Harbor. Head southwest on Route 3, which is the main road. Follow Route 3 for approximately 10 miles until you reach the intersection with Fernald Point Road. Turn left onto Fernald Point Road and continue for about 1 mile. The Flying Mountain Trailhead will be on your left at 96 Fernald Point Rd, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679. There is a small parking area available for visitors.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, take the Island Explorer bus service, which operates in the summer months. Board the bus at any of the stops in Bar Harbor and take it to the Southwest Harbor stop. From there, you will need to walk approximately 1 mile to the Flying Mountain Trailhead. Head southwest on Main Street, then turn onto Fernald Point Road. Follow Fernald Point Road until you reach the trailhead at 96 Fernald Point Rd. Note that the bus service can have varying schedules, so check the latest timetable for accurate timings.

• Bicycle

  For those who prefer cycling, you can rent a bike in Bar Harbor. Follow Route 3 heading southwest for about 10 miles. Once you reach the intersection with Fernald Point Road, turn left and cycle for another mile to reach the Flying Mountain Trailhead. Ensure that you wear a helmet and follow all traffic rules. Be aware that the roads can be busy, especially in the summer.

• Walking

  If you're staying nearby in Southwest Harbor, you can walk to the Flying Mountain Trailhead. Start from the center of Southwest Harbor and head southwest on Main Street. Continue until you reach Fernald Point Road, then turn left. The trailhead is approximately 1 mile down Fernald Point Road at 96 Fernald Point Rd. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, as the route can have uneven surfaces.
