History of St. Joseph

Before European settlers arrived, the area now known as St. Joseph was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi. The fertile lands and access to Lake Michigan made it an ideal location for these communities. The Potawatomi called the river flowing into Lake Michigan 'Sakiwäsipi,' meaning 'River of the Sauks.'
