History of Rijnmond

Rotterdam, the largest city in the Rijnmond region, was officially founded in 1270 when a dam was constructed in the Rotte River. The city's strategic location on the Nieuwe Maas River facilitated trade and commerce, making it a significant port by the 14th century.
During the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648), the Rijnmond region played a vital role in the Dutch struggle for independence from Spanish rule.
