Getting There

  • Car

    To reach Crucible Lake by car, first make your way to Wanaka, a popular gateway town to Mount Aspiring National Park. From Wanaka, head north on State Highway 6 for approximately 30 km until you reach the sign for the Lake Hawea Lookout. Here, turn left onto the Lake Hawea - Mount Aspiring Road (also known as the Aspiring Road). Continue driving along this scenic route for around 30 km, following the signs for the Mount Aspiring National Park. You will eventually reach the Raspberry Flat car park. This is the primary starting point for the hike to Crucible Lake. Note that there is no fee for parking at Raspberry Flat.

  • Hiking

    From Raspberry Flat car park, you will embark on a hiking trail leading to Crucible Lake. The hike is approximately 18 km one way and can take around 6 to 8 hours, depending on your fitness level. Begin by following the marked trail through beech forest and alongside the Matukituki River. After about 3 hours of hiking, you will reach the junction where the trail forks. Take the left fork towards the French Ridge. Continue on this route, which will lead you through alpine landscapes. The last stretch involves a steep ascent, so be prepared. Follow the signs until you reach Crucible Lake at the end of the trail. Ensure to carry plenty of water, food, and a map, as the area can be remote.

  • Public Transportation

    If you are using public transportation, you can take a bus from Queenstown or Wanaka to the nearest drop-off point. From Wanaka, the bus service to Raspberry Flat is not direct, so you may need to take a bus to the nearest point and arrange for a taxi or shuttle service to take you to Raspberry Flat car park. Be sure to check the local bus schedules and plan accordingly, as services may be limited. Once at Raspberry Flat, you will need to hike to Crucible Lake as described above.
