If you are travelling by car from Mount Cook Village, head south on State Highway 80 towards Twizel. After approximately 30 minutes (28 km), you will reach the intersection with State Highway 8. Turn left onto State Highway 8 and continue for about 30 minutes (25 km) towards Lake Tekapo. As you approach Lake Tekapo, look for signs directing you to the University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory. Follow the signs to the observatory, which is located on Mt John, approximately 12 km from Lake Tekapo. The road is a bit steep and winding, so drive carefully.
