Car
If you are driving from Mount Cook Village, head south on State Highway 80. After approximately 30 minutes, you will reach the intersection with State Highway 8. Turn right onto State Highway 8 and continue for about 40 kilometers until you reach Lake Tekapo. Look for signs directing you to the Mt John Observatory. Once in Lake Tekapo, follow the signs to the observatory, which is located on Mt John. The road up to the observatory is well-marked. Note that there is a small parking fee, so make sure to have cash or a card ready.

Public transport options are limited in this area. However, you can take a bus from Mount Cook Village to Lake Tekapo. The bus service is operated by InterCity or other local services. Once you arrive at the Lake Tekapo bus station, you will need to take a taxi or ride-sharing service to the observatory, as it is approximately 13 kilometers away from the town center.
