To get to the Buried Village of Te Wairoa from the Rotorua city center, start by heading to the Rotorua Bus Station located at 1170 Pukuatua Street. From there, take the 'Rotoiti' bus operated by Rotorua City Ride. Make sure to check the bus schedule for times and frequency. The bus will take you along State Highway 30 and then turn onto Tarawera Road. After approximately 30 minutes, you will reach the stop nearest to the Buried Village at 'Tarawera Road'. From the bus stop, walk approximately 1.5 kilometers down Tarawera Road towards Lake Tarawera. The Buried Village will be on your left at 1180 Tarawera Road.

If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike from one of the local rental shops in Rotorua. Head to 1180 Tarawera Road via the Ngongotaha Cycleway. Start by cycling southeast on Fenton Street and then follow the signs to the cycleway. This route is approximately 15 kilometers and will take you through scenic areas. After around 1 hour of cycling, you will arrive at the Buried Village of Te Wairoa, located on your left.

Walking
For the adventurous, walking to the Buried Village can be a unique experience. Starting from the Rotorua city center, head southeast on Fenton Street, and then continue straight onto Lake Road. Follow this road toward Tarawera Road, which will lead you to the village. The entire walk is approximately 15 kilometers and may take around 3-4 hours. Ensure you wear comfortable shoes and carry water, as parts of the route may have limited amenities.
