Getting There

  • Bus

    Start at the Rotorua i-SITE Visitor Centre located at 1170 Fenton Street. From there, catch the 'Blue' or 'Green' Rotorua City Ride bus which operates regularly. Inform the driver you want to get off at the 'Lake Okareka' stop. The bus ride takes approximately 30 minutes. Once you get off, follow the Lake Okareka Road signs to reach the lake.

  • Walking

    If you are near the city centre, you can walk to Lake Okareka. Head south on Fenton Street, then turn left onto Pukuatua Street. Continue straight until you reach the intersection with Old Taupo Road. Turn right onto Old Taupo Road and walk until you reach the Lake Okareka Road junction. Follow Lake Okareka Road for about 5 km until you reach the lake. This walk will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

  • Bicycle

    For those who prefer cycling, rent a bike from one of the local rental shops in Rotorua. Start your journey at the Rotorua i-SITE Visitor Centre and head south on Fenton Street. Make a left onto Pukuatua Street, then continue straight onto Old Taupo Road. Follow the road until you reach Lake Okareka Road, and cycle for about 5 km until you reach the lake. The total cycling distance is approximately 10 km one way, and it should take around 30-45 minutes.
