Getting There

Bus

From Taupo town center, head to the Taupo i-SITE Visitor Information Centre located at 30 Tongariro Street. Here, you can catch a local bus to Wairakei. The bus service to Wairakei runs regularly, so check the schedule in advance. Once you reach Wairakei, disembark at the stop nearest to the Craters of the Moon, which is approximately a 15-minute walk. Head south on Wairakei Drive, then turn left onto Karapiti Road. Continue on this road until you reach the entrance of Craters of the Moon at 171 Karapiti Road.
Walking

If you’re starting from the Taupo town center and prefer a longer scenic route, you can walk. Head towards the lakefront and follow the path along the lake. After about 30 minutes, make your way onto Wairakei Drive, continuing to follow signs towards Wairakei. Once you reach Wairakei, turn left onto Karapiti Road. It’s about a 1.5-hour walk, so ensure you have comfortable shoes and water.
Bicycle

For an active option, rent a bicycle from one of the local rental shops in Taupo. Start at the Taupo lakefront and cycle along the scenic lakeside paths. Follow the signs towards Wairakei, which is approximately 8 km from Taupo. Once you reach Wairakei, turn left onto Karapiti Road.
