From anywhere in the West Coast region, take State Highway 6 (SH6) and head northeast towards Greymouth. Continue on SH6 until you reach the intersection with State Highway 1 (SH1) near Kawatiri. Turn left onto SH1 and follow the signs towards Wellington. After approximately 180km, take the exit for Waikanae (Exit 8) onto Ngaio Road. Continue on Ngaio Road until you reach Waikanae Beach, where you can find parking facilities nearby. Depending on traffic conditions, the drive may take around 2.5 to 3 hours.

Public Transportation
To reach Waikanae Beach via public transport, you can take a bus from various locations in the West Coast region to Wellington. Once in Wellington, head to the Wellington Train Station. From there, take the Metlink train on the Kapiti Line towards Waikanae. The train journey takes about 1 hour. After arriving at Waikanae Station, it’s about a 5-10 minute walk to Waikanae Beach. Note that the bus fare will vary depending on your starting location, and the train fare is approximately NZD 10-15.
