History of New Bern

Tuscarora and Coastal Foundations

Long before European settlement, the region around the Neuse and Trent rivers was home to Indigenous peoples, including the Tuscarora. In 1710, Christoph von Graffenried led Swiss and German settlers to the area, where they established New Bern and named it after Bern in Switzerland. The settlement occupied a strategic position on navigable waterways, linking the interior of North Carolina with the coast. Its early development was shaped by farming, river transport and relations with neighbouring Indigenous communities. Conflict culminated in the Tuscarora War of 1711–1715, a major struggle that transformed the balance of power in eastern North Carolina and had lasting consequences for Tuscarora communities.

A Colonial Capital on the Neuse

New Bern became an important centre of colonial administration as the population and economy of eastern North Carolina expanded. In 1770, Governor William Tryon moved the colony's seat of government to the town, and Tryon Palace was completed soon afterwards. The palace served as the governor's residence and the meeting place of the colonial assembly, giving New Bern a political importance greater than its size. The American Revolution ended its role as the colonial capital, but the town remained a significant port and commercial community.
