History of Old Road Town

Kalinago Heritage Before Colonisation

Long before European settlement, Saint Kitts was inhabited by Indigenous peoples, including Kalinago communities whose presence is reflected in archaeological evidence and in the island’s surviving cultural memory. The island’s fertile volcanic slopes, freshwater sources and coastal landing places supported settlement, cultivation and movement between communities. European accounts later described these societies through colonial eyes, so the early history should be approached with care rather than reduced to the narratives of English and French settlers.
