    From the center of Rapid City, head to the nearest bus stop. Look for the 'RAPID TRANSIT' bus service. Take the bus that is heading towards Custer, specifically the route that goes to Custer State Park. Make sure to check the bus schedule in advance, as buses may not run frequently. After approximately 40 minutes of travel, get off at the stop closest to Custer State Park. The Peter Norbeck Outdoor Education Center is located a short walk from the bus stop, following US-16A towards the west. You will see signs directing you to the center.

  • Bicycle Rental

    If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bicycle from one of the local bike rental shops in downtown Rapid City. After renting a bike, follow the bike paths leading out of the city towards Custer. The ride is about 20 miles and will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Follow the signs for US-16A, and make sure to stay on the designated biking lanes for safety. Upon reaching Custer, look for the Peter Norbeck Outdoor Education Center on your left side along US-16A.

    For the adventurous tourist, consider walking to the Peter Norbeck Outdoor Education Center. Starting from downtown Rapid City, head south on 5th St until you reach Omaha St, then turn left. Continue walking until you reach the junction with US-16A. Turn right onto US-16A and follow the road for about 20 miles. Keep in mind this will be a long walk, taking approximately 6 to 8 hours, so plan accordingly and bring plenty of water and snacks. The center will be on your left side as you approach Custer.
