Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car from Ampara town, take the A4 highway towards Pottuvil. Continue on the A4 for approximately 20 kilometers. Look for the turnoff to the Somawathiya National Park, which is marked with signs. After turning off, follow the road for about 10 kilometers until you reach the park entrance. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition as the last stretch may have uneven surfaces.

• Public Transportation

  For public transportation, head to the Ampara bus station and catch a bus heading towards Pottuvil. Ensure you inform the bus driver that you wish to get off at the stop for Somawathiya National Park. The bus ride will take around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. After getting off, you may need to hire a tuk-tuk or a local taxi for the final 10 kilometers to the park entrance, which should cost around 500-1000 LKR.

• Tuk-Tuk

  If you are in a nearby town like Gangapahalavila, you can hire a tuk-tuk directly to Somawathiya National Park. Negotiate the fare beforehand; it should typically range from 1000 to 1500 LKR for a round trip, depending on your starting point. The tuk-tuk ride will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes, offering a scenic view of the surrounding areas.

• Bicycle

  For the more adventurous, consider renting a bicycle in Ampara and cycling to Somawathiya National Park. The distance is about 30 kilometers. Follow the A4 highway towards Pottuvil, and take the indicated turnoff towards the park. Make sure to carry enough water and snacks, as facilities may be limited along the way. It will take approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on your cycling speed.
