History of Lanna

The Lanna Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields, was founded in 1292 by King Mengrai. He established Chiang Mai as the capital in 1296, a city that would become a cultural and economic hub in northern Thailand. The kingdom thrived by engaging in trade and forming alliances with neighboring kingdoms.
The 15th century marked the Golden Age of Lanna under the rule of King Tilokarat. During this period, the kingdom expanded its territory and saw a flourishing of arts, architecture, and Theravada Buddhism. The construction of Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh are enduring symbols of this prosperous era.
In 1558, the Lanna Kingdom fell under Burmese control after a series of wars. For over two centuries, Lanna was a vassal state to Burma. This period saw a decline in the kingdom's political power but left a lasting cultural influence, evident in the region's art, language, and traditions.
By the late 18th century, Lanna was gradually incorporated into the Kingdom of Siam (modern-day Thailand).
