Foundations of Norman Power in Leicester

Leicester Castle was established shortly after the Norman Conquest, around 1068–1070, by Hugh de Grandmesnil, a companion of William the Conqueror. Built as a motte-and-bailey fortress atop the remains of Roman town walls, it strategically commanded the River Soar and the southwestern edge of the medieval town. Initially constructed in timber, the castle’s defenses and residential buildings evolved over the centuries into substantial stone structures, reflecting the shifting needs and status of its occupants.
