Discover more about Twinings - The Strand
Origins of a British Tea Tradition
Twinings began in 1706 when Thomas Twining, originally from Gloucestershire, purchased Tom’s Coffee House on the Strand, an area newly favored by wealthy Londoners after the Great Fire of 1666. Recognizing the growing popularity of tea among the aristocracy, Thomas shifted focus from coffee to tea, pioneering the sale of dry tea for home brewing. This innovation allowed women, who were barred from coffeehouses, to enjoy tea in their homes by sending servants to purchase it. By 1717, Thomas had expanded the business by acquiring neighboring properties, establishing what became the world’s first dry tea and coffee shop at 216 Strand. The Iconic Entrance and Symbolism
The distinctive neo-classical entrance, commissioned in 1787 by Richard Twining, Thomas’s grandson, features a golden lion lying down—a tribute to the founder—and two Chinese figures representing tea’s origins. This entrance and the Twinings logo, created at the same time, are among the oldest commercial symbols in continuous use worldwide. The shop’s historic façade stands prominently opposite the Royal Courts of Justice, a reminder of Twinings’ enduring presence in London’s cultural and commercial life.Evolution Through Generations
After Thomas Twining’s death in 1741, his son Daniel expanded the company’s reach, including early exports to America. Despite political challenges such as the Boston Tea Party, Twinings maintained its reputation for quality. Mary Twining, Daniel’s widow, managed the business during turbulent times, including the American Revolution, demonstrating resilience and leadership unusual for women in the 18th century. Richard Twining later enhanced the shop’s identity, commissioning the emblematic entrance that remains today.A Living Heritage and Modern Experience
Today, Twinings at 216 Strand is both a historical landmark and a vibrant tea destination. The shop offers a premium loose leaf sampling bar where visitors can taste and learn about a diverse range of teas. A small museum within the premises showcases artefacts and the company’s royal heritage, including its Royal Warrant granted by Queen Victoria. The store also hosts masterclasses, both in-person and virtual, providing immersive tea experiences that celebrate over three centuries of tea culture. The Cultural Significance of Twinings
Twinings helped establish tea as Britain’s national drink, overcoming high taxes and social conventions. Its pioneering role in making tea accessible beyond coffeehouse confines contributed to the drink’s widespread popularity. The shop’s location on the Strand, a historic thoroughfare connecting the City of London and Westminster, situates it at the heart of London’s social and political history. Twinings remains a symbol of British tradition, innovation, and the enduring love of tea.Distinctive Features and Visitor Appeal
Though compact, the Twinings shop is rich in character, combining historical architecture with modern retail and tasting experiences. The golden lion and Chinese figures above the entrance are iconic photo opportunities. Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and inviting, with knowledgeable staff ready to guide visitors through the extensive tea selection. The shop’s continuous operation since 1706 makes it a unique pilgrimage site for tea lovers and history enthusiasts alike.Iconic landmarks you can’t miss
