The Madison County Nature Trail, also known as the Green Mountain Nature Trail, offers a peaceful retreat high above the city on Green Mountain in Huntsville, Alabama. This 72-acre park centers around the 17-acre Sky Lake, providing a scenic backdrop for a variety of outdoor activities. The 1.5-mile walking trail that loops around Sky Lake is relatively easy, making it suitable for all skill levels. Along the way, you'll encounter the charming Cambron Covered Bridge, a popular photo spot, especially during the fall when the surrounding foliage is ablaze with color. The bridge is named after Joe E. Cambron, the Madison County Bridge Foreman from 1958-1974. Another highlight is the authentic log cabin, originally built around 1810 near New Market. The Herbert P. Walker family donated the cabin, which was then carefully reassembled at the Nature Trail, offering a glimpse into the lives of early settlers. The park also features a Braille trail, picnic areas, an open-air pavilion, an A-frame chapel available for rent, and an outdoor classroom. The Nature Trail is a designated Treasure Forest and Wildlife Sanctuary, showcasing diverse plant life, including the state's largest and oldest Champion Winged Elm Tree. It's a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, with beautiful azaleas and dogwoods blooming in the spring and colorful wildflowers in the summer. In the fall, the trees display a glorious collage of color.
