Discover more about Residenzbrunnen

The Residenzbrunnen, or Residence Fountain, is an exquisite historical landmark situated in the heart of Salzburg. It serves as a stunning centerpiece in the Residenzplatz, surrounded by the opulent architecture of the Salzburg Residenz, which was once the residence of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg. The Residenzplatz itself is a magnificent square in the heart of Salzburg's Old Town. It is bordered by striking buildings, including the New Residence with its carillon, the Salzburg Cathedral, the Old Residence, and a closed row of town houses. Constructed between 1656 and 1661, the Residenzbrunnen is one of the largest Baroque fountains in Central Europe. It was commissioned by Archbishop Guidobald von Thun and designed by Tommaso di Garona, with Antonio Dario serving as chief engineer. The fountain is made of Untersberg marble and stands approximately 13 meters tall. The fountain's design features a lower basin with Baroque decorations, surrounded by the coats of arms of Archbishop Guidobald von Thun. In the middle, a rock is surrounded by four water-spouting sea horses (hippocampi) and four Atlases carrying a shallow water bowl. Three dolphins support another basin, topped by a Triton statue ejecting water upwards. The fountain was inspired by the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in Rome. Originally, the fountain was intended to draw water from the Fürstenbrunner spring on the Untersberg, but later the Hellbrunner Sternweiher spring was used. Today, it is connected to the Salzburg water supply network. The Residenzbrunnen is not only a visual delight but also holds historical significance, reflecting the artistic and cultural achievements of Salzburg during the Baroque period.
