Discover more about Residenzbrunnen

The Residenzbrunnen, the centerpiece of Salzburg's Residenzplatz, is a magnificent Baroque fountain that stands as a testament to the city's rich history and artistic achievements. The Residenzplatz itself was established in the late 16th century by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who sought to create grand public spaces in Salzburg inspired by the Renaissance and Baroque styles of Rome. To make way for the square, 55 burgher houses and a cemetery were demolished. The Residenzbrunnen was commissioned by Archbishop Guidobald von Thun and designed by Tommaso di Garona, with Antonio Dario serving as chief engineer. Constructed from Untersberg marble, the fountain is divided into several sections, each adorned with elaborate sculptures. The base features four sea horses surrounding a rock covered in marine animals, which supports four men carrying a bowl. This bowl then holds three dolphins that carry another basin, topped by a statue of Triton holding a conch shell. The fountain's design also highlights the importance of horses in Salzburg during the 17th and 18th centuries. The four water-spouting horses at the base of the fountain symbolize the city's equestrian traditions. Over the centuries, the Residenzbrunnen has become a central meeting point and a venue for numerous events. The Salzburg Festival, Christmas markets, and even scenes from 'The Sound of Music' have all taken place with the fountain as a backdrop. Today, the Residenzbrunnen continues to captivate visitors with its beauty and historical significance, offering a glimpse into Salzburg's Baroque past.
