Discover more about Upland Park

Upland Park, also known as Dagustu Park, is a prominent landmark in Baku, Azerbaijan, offering visitors a serene escape with unparalleled panoramic views of the city and the Caspian Sea. Situated on a hill overlooking Baku, the park provides a unique vantage point to appreciate the blend of modern architecture and historical landmarks that define the city's skyline. Originally conceived in the 1930s, the area now occupied by Upland Park had a different purpose; it was once the location of a multi-confessional cemetery. In the early 20th century, the cemetery was demolished, and the area was transformed into a park named after Sergey Kirov, a Soviet politician. The park featured carousels, cafes and restaurants. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the park was renamed Upland Park. In the early 1990s, following the tragic events of Black January and the Nagorno-Karabakh War, a portion of the park was dedicated to the Alley of Martyrs. This solemn memorial commemorates those who lost their lives during these conflicts, serving as a poignant reminder of Azerbaijan's struggle for independence and territorial integrity. The Alley of Martyrs features rows of graves and an eternal flame, symbolizing remembrance and respect for the fallen heroes. Today, Upland Park seamlessly blends its historical significance with its role as a recreational space. Visitors can explore well-maintained pathways, relax on benches amidst lush greenery, and admire various monuments and sculptures that reflect Azerbaijani culture and heritage. The park's elevated position offers stunning views of iconic landmarks such as the Flame Towers, Maiden Tower, and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. The Flame Towers, in particular, stand out as modern symbols of Baku, their glass facades reflecting the city lights and creating a mesmerizing spectacle at night. Located within Upland Park is the Turkish Mosque, also known as the Martyrs' Mosque, a symbol of the close ties between Azerbaijan and Turkey. On the opposite side of the Alley of Martyrs, there is a mosque that carries the name of “Mosque of Mortyrs” or Turkish mosque, it was built at the end of 20th centure and despite its size, which doesn't appear big, it is a very important and beautiful showcase of Azerbaijani architecture. It has two minarets, which are decorated with islamic crescents. Now going further inside the Upland Park, we are faced with a lot of open space areas which are connected by hundreds of steps and small alleys, where you can sit in peace and enjoy the atmosphere as much as the views.
