Discover more about Fannette Island

Fannette Island, the sole island in Lake Tahoe, rises dramatically from the crystalline waters of Emerald Bay. This rugged granite upthrust, reaching 150 feet above the lake, has been known by many names over the centuries, including Coquette, Baranoff, Dead Man's, Hermit's, and Emerald Isle. Geologists believe Fannette Island is a resistant rib of granite that withstood the glacial forces that carved out Emerald Bay thousands of years ago. The island's more recent history includes Captain Dick Barter, an eccentric Englishman who lived on the island in the late 19th century and reportedly built a tomb and chapel there. The island's most iconic feature is the stone shell of a tea house, constructed in the 1920s for Lora Knight, the owner of nearby Vikingsholm. Knight would transport guests by boat to the island for tea, offering stunning views of the bay and surrounding landscape. The tea house had a rustic design, featuring a fireplace, oak table, and chairs within its 16-foot by 16-foot space. Though the tea house has been vandalized over the years, its remains still stand as a testament to the island's colorful past. Today, Fannette Island is part of Emerald Bay State Park and is accessible by boat, kayak, or paddleboard. Visitors can explore the island, hike to the tea house ruins, and enjoy panoramic views of Lake Tahoe. Camping and dogs are prohibited on the island.
