Discover more about Mount Diablo Summit Museum and Trailhead

The Mount Diablo Summit Museum, located within Mount Diablo State Park, is more than just a museum; it's a portal to understanding the mountain's significance, geology, and diverse ecosystems. The museum resides in a historic stone building, a testament to the craftsmanship of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the late 1930s. The building itself was constructed from fossiliferous sandstone blocks quarried from within the park. Look closely, and you'll spot ancient marine fossils embedded in the walls. Inside, impressive exhibits chronicle the history of the mountain and capture its majesty. A rock wall with an instructional video examines the geological forces that created the mountain. Panels describe the Native American history of the region, highlighting the cultural and spiritual importance of Mount Diablo to indigenous tribes like the Miwok, Ohlone, and Bay Miwok peoples. A diorama, complete with native sounds, offers an overview of the park's ecosystems, while a model acquaints visitors with important park locations. The Summit Visitor Center is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Admission to the museum is free, though there is a park entry fee. The museum also features a gift shop and an audio-visual room. An elevator provides access from the lower level entrance to the upper museum floor and observation roof. On the walk up the circular stairway to the observation deck, visitors are treated to a look at ancient marine fossils embedded in the sandstone walls. Above the rotunda is a beacon, historically important to aviators and now lighted once a year on December 7 in memory of those who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor. Outside, an observation deck provides some of the most fantastic views in the world. On a clear day, you can see the San Francisco Bay Area, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and even the Farallon Islands. Telescopes are available to enhance the viewing experience. The museum also serves as a trailhead for various hiking trails, including the popular Summit Trail.
