Discover more about Happy Isles Bridge

Happy Isles Bridge, situated on the main stem of the Merced River in Yosemite National Park, marks the eastern end of Yosemite Valley and provides access to the Nature Center at Happy Isles. The bridge is a gateway to some of the park's most famous trails. Millions of visitors use this departure point to access the Mist Trail leading to Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall, as well as the beginning of the 211-mile John Muir Trail. The original bridge, called the Tis-sa-ack Bridge, was built as early as 1883. In 1921, the Happy Isles Gauging Station Bridge was constructed as a reinforced-concrete girder bridge. The bridge was intended to serve as a primary road bridge, but it was soon determined that the bridge could not adequately serve vehicle traffic levels. In 1929, the National Park Service built a new bridge 500 feet downstream, called the Happy Isles Vehicle Bridge. After the new bridge was built, the Happy Isles Gauging Station Bridge was used for pedestrian traffic, pack animals, and service vehicles until 1997. Today, the bridge provides access to the Happy Isles Nature Center and various trails. The Happy Isles Stream Gauge, operated by the U.S. Geological Survey, is located near the bridge and has been in continuous operation since 1915, providing the longest continuous record of streamflow data available anywhere in California.
