Discover more about Upper Yosemite Falls Trail

The Upper Yosemite Falls Trail is an iconic and challenging hike that ascends to the top of Yosemite Falls, North America's tallest waterfall. Rising 2,425 feet (739 m) above the valley floor, this strenuous 7.2-mile (11.6 km) round trip offers breathtaking scenery and a demanding workout. The trail begins near Camp 4, a historic site in the development of rock climbing. From the trailhead, the path immediately climbs via switchbacks through an oak woodland. As you ascend, the trees thin, revealing glimpses of Yosemite Valley's iconic landmarks. After about 1 mile (1.6 km) and many switchbacks, you'll reach Columbia Rock, a panoramic viewpoint with stunning views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and Sentinel Rock. Beyond Columbia Rock, the trail continues its relentless climb, becoming steeper and more exposed. The final stretch involves a narrow descent to an overlook directly adjacent to the top of the waterfall. Exercise caution here, as the trail can be dangerous when icy or slippery. The reward is an unparalleled view of Yosemite Falls and the valley below. For those with extra energy, continue 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to Yosemite Point for even more expansive views. Be aware that water is scarce along the trail, especially during summer. Bring at least 3-4 liters of water per person.
