Discover more about Yosemite Valley Chapel

Nestled in the heart of Yosemite Valley, the Yosemite Valley Chapel stands as a testament to history and tranquility. Built in 1879, it is the oldest structure still in public use in Yosemite National Park. The chapel's origins trace back to the California State Sunday School Association, with construction costs ranging between $3,000 and $4,000, primarily funded by donations. Designed by San Francisco architect Charles Geddes in the Carpenter Gothic style, the chapel exudes a simple yet elegant charm. Originally located near the Four Mile Trail, the chapel was moved to its current location in 1901 as the surrounding community dwindled. The chapel has a rich history, having hosted a memorial service for President Ulysses S. Grant in 1887, with Sir Arthur Sullivan of Gilbert and Sullivan fame playing the organ. Over the years, the chapel has undergone restorations, including raising the foundation in 1965 to protect against flooding. Despite sustaining damage in the 1997 flood, it has been lovingly restored. Today, the Yosemite Valley Chapel continues to be a place of worship and a sought-after wedding venue. Its doors open to breathtaking views, with Yosemite Falls visible from the front. The chapel provides a serene escape, inviting visitors to reflect amidst the stunning natural beauty of Yosemite. Sunday services are held throughout the year, and the chapel is wheelchair accessible.
