The Needle is a breccia structure, formed approximately 1.5 million years ago when a volcano collapsed, creating the island's distinctive landscape. According to local folklore, the Needle was formed when the great god Tangaroa threw a spear into the earth, creating this iconic landmark. The spire itself is a near vertical cylinder of rock that is roughly between 65 and 85 meters (213 and 279 feet) high. The hike to Te Rua Manga's base is a popular activity, offering a moderately challenging trek through Rarotonga's tropical jungle.
