Discover more about Parque Nacional Chirripó

Chirripó National Park, established in 1975, protects a vast and ecologically diverse region in Costa Rica's Talamanca Mountain Range. The park spans over 50,150 hectares (125,600 acres) and is home to Cerro Chirripó Grande, the highest peak in Costa Rica and Central America, reaching an elevation of 3,820 meters (12,533 feet). The name 'Chirripó' originates from an indigenous word meaning 'Land of Eternal Waters,' a fitting title for a park receiving up to 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) of rain annually. The park's varying altitudes, climates, and soils create a remarkable range of ecosystems. Hikers traverse through lowland tropical wet forests, premontane forests, cloud forests, and the unique subalpine wet forest known as páramo. This high moorland is characterized by towering oak trees, ferns, and bamboo. The park is a haven for wildlife, including spider monkeys, Baird's tapirs, peccaries, jaguars, and pumas, as well as over 400 species of birds, including the resplendent quetzal. The primary attraction is the challenging hike to the summit of Cerro Chirripó. The 20-kilometer (12.4-mile) trail climbs nearly 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) from San Gerardo de Rivas. On a clear day, the summit offers breathtaking panoramic views stretching from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. The park also features glacial formations like U-shaped valleys, lakes, and terraces. Visitors need permits to enter the park and should make reservations well in advance, especially for weekends and holidays. Camping is prohibited within the park, but lodging is available at the Crestones Base Camp, a rustic lodge located about 14.5 kilometers (9 miles) from the trailhead. The park is generally open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
