Discover more about Rold Forest

Rold Forest, or Rold Skov, is more than just a collection of trees; it's a sprawling, breathing entity that encapsulates the very essence of Danish nature and folklore. Situated in the heart of Himmerland, in North Jutland, it stands as Denmark's largest connected forest, covering approximately 80 square kilometers (8,000 hectares). This vast expanse is not merely a single entity but a mosaic of smaller, distinct woodlands, each with its own character and name, such as Hesselholt Skov, Nørreskov, Nørlund Skov, and Rold Vesterskov. Rold Forest's history is deeply intertwined with the geological and human history of the region. The landscape itself is a product of the last ice age, with a high-lying moraine plateau shaped by glacial activity over 18,000 years ago. The subsoil consists of white chalk and limestone dating back 65 million years. This unique geology gives rise to unusual phenomena like sinkholes, formed when rainwater, acidified by decaying plant matter, dissolves the chalk and limestone beneath the surface. These sinkholes, some of which are quite sizable, have even inspired local legends, such as Røverstuen (the Robber's Den), said to have been a hideout for bandits of old. The forest's human history stretches back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, with numerous burial mounds and dolmens scattered throughout the area. These ancient monuments serve as silent witnesses to the lives and beliefs of the people who inhabited this land thousands of years ago. Over the centuries, Rold Forest has played a vital role in the lives of the local communities, providing timber, grazing land, and a source of sustenance. However, over-exploitation and forest grazing led to a decline in the forest's health until the implementation of forest reserve regulations in 1805. Today, Rold Forest is a protected natural area, managed by both private estates and the Danish Nature Agency. It is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a wide range of activities and experiences. Hiking is particularly popular, with numerous well-marked trails catering to all skill levels. The 'Rebild Bakker Ruten' is a well-known trail that takes you through some of the area's highlights, while other trails lead to hidden springs, ancient monuments, and scenic viewpoints. Mountain biking is also a popular activity, with dedicated trails for riders of all abilities. For those seeking a more leisurely experience, horseback riding and horse carriage rides are also available. One of the most enchanting aspects of Rold Forest is its diverse flora and fauna. The forest is primarily coniferous, with large stands of old spruce and fir. However, efforts have been made to preserve the old, picturesque beech forests, particularly in areas like Rebild Bakker and Troldeskoven (the Troll Forest). These ancient beech trees, with their twisted and gnarled trunks, create a magical atmosphere, inspiring local folklore and legends. The forest is also home to a variety of wildlife, including foxes, badgers, red deer, bats, and a wide array of bird species. Lucky visitors may even spot rare orchids like the Lady Slipper Orchid. Beyond its natural beauty, Rold Forest offers a glimpse into Danish cultural heritage. The Rebild National Park, located within the forest, was established in 1912 thanks to a donation of land by Danish-Americans, with the stipulation that it be preserved as a natural area and made available for American celebrations, particularly the 4th of July. This tradition continues to this day, with annual celebrations that attract thousands of visitors. For families, Rold Forest offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor fun. There are several nature playgrounds, including Røverknolden, which features a 'senses-path' inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale Thumbelina. The forest's lakes, such as Madum Sø and Store Økssø, are ideal for swimming, fishing, and canoeing. Picnic areas are scattered throughout the forest, providing perfect spots for enjoying a meal surrounded by nature's tranquility. Rold Forest is a destination that appeals to all senses and interests. Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or a deeper connection with nature and culture, this enchanted woodland offers an unforgettable experience. From the rustling leaves of the ancient beech trees to the crystal-clear waters of the springs and lakes, Rold Forest is a place where memories are made and the spirit is renewed. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the forest garden of Jutland, opened to the public in 1970. Here, you can find more than 150 different species of trees and bushes from all over the northern hemisphere. Also, be sure to visit some of the most renowned sinkholes in the forest, located south of Rebild, around and close to the lake St. Økssø. This part of the forest is very old, meaning that you will find some of the largest and highest trees here, especially at Jætternes Baghave (Garden of the Giants). Whether you are on a family holiday with children, or more into speed and adrenaline, the forest is also a cool place for trails and mountain biking. You will also find lots of hiking routes - and you can actually also go on a horseback or horse carriage rides. You can also spend your time looking for mushrooms or great picnic spots. But take care of yourself - you might meet the thieves from Rold.
