Bøgsted Rende
Bøgsted Rende, Thy National Park
A wind-twisted pocket of birch and spruce where a 19th‑century experiment to tame drifting sands has grown into an eerie, primeval thicket in National Park Thy.
Tucked inside National Park Thy near Thisted, Thagaards Plantage is a small, otherworldly pocket of gnarled birch and spruce, many of them around two centuries old. Laid out in 1816 as one of Denmark’s first experiments to halt drifting coastal sands, it has since evolved into a dense, primeval thicket where trees grow as wide as they are tall, trunks twisted by salt-laden winds. Quiet, easy forest paths make this a contemplative stop for walkers, nature lovers and anyone curious about how people learned to tame the dunes.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Car from Thisted
From central Thisted, reaching Thagaards Plantage by car typically takes around 25–35 minutes, depending on traffic and seasonal conditions. The route follows paved regional roads through Thy towards Tvorup Klitplantage, then smaller access roads into the forest area. There is usually free parking at or near trailheads serving the plantation, but spaces are limited in high summer and on sunny weekends. Fuel up and use restrooms in Thisted or nearby villages, as facilities close to the plantation are sparse.
Regional bus plus walk
Public buses running along the Thy coast connect Thisted with stops near National Park Thy and Tvorup Klitplantage, with journeys generally taking 40–60 minutes including waiting times. A standard regional bus ticket for this distance typically costs in the range of 30–60 DKK, depending on zones and any discount cards. From the nearest bus stop, expect an additional walk of 20–40 minutes on forest and dune paths to reach the heart of Thagaards Plantage, on largely level but sometimes sandy terrain.
Cycling from nearby coastal towns
Confident cyclists can combine a visit to Thagaards Plantage with a coastal ride, for example starting from Klitmøller or other nearby villages. Travel times will vary with your starting point, but a one‑way ride from Klitmøller typically takes about 30–50 minutes at a leisurely pace on a mix of paved roads and well‑surfaced forest tracks. There is no fee for access, but be prepared for changeable coastal winds and bring lights and reflective gear if you expect to return in low light, as dedicated cycling infrastructure is not continuous.
