Discover more about Remparts d'Avignon

The Remparts d'Avignon, a UNESCO World Heritage site, form a complete ring around Avignon's historic center, stretching 4.3 kilometers. Construction began in 1355 under Pope Innocent VI and was completed in 1370 under Pope Urban V, intended to protect the city from mercenary groups during a turbulent era. These imposing walls, reaching approximately eight meters in height, are constructed primarily from local stone. Originally, the ramparts featured battlements, machicolations, 35 large towers, and 50 smaller intermediary towers. Over time, the walls have been modified, with the original twelve gates reduced to seven. Today, there are 15 vehicular entrances and 11 pedestrian entrances. A walk along the ramparts offers visitors panoramic views of the Rhône Valley, Pont Saint-Bénézet, and other landmarks. Starting at Porte de la République, a circular path connects to attractions like Parc des Doms and Palais des Papes. The juxtaposition of the ancient walls with modern Avignon creates a unique atmosphere. Avignon has a history of multiple ramparts. In the 13th century, a double set of walls with moats protected the city. However, Avignon was forced to dismantle these fortifications after a three-month siege by King Louis VIII in 1226.
