Getting There

  • Car

    To reach Richtis Gorge by car, navigate to Exo Mouliana village, located on the national road between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. From Sitia, drive approximately 20 kilometers west. From Agios Nikolaos, it's about 50 kilometers east. In Exo Mouliana, follow signs for Richtis Gorge. Park near the Lachanas Bridge, the starting point of the hiking trail. Parking is free but limited, so arrive early. An alternative, more challenging route involves driving down to Richtis Beach on a steep, winding road, preferably with a 4x4 vehicle. From there, hike up to the waterfall.

  • Public Transport

    To reach Richtis Gorge by public transport, take a KTEL bus connecting Sitia and Agios Nikolaos. Get off at the 'Exo Mouliana' stop. From the bus stop, it's a walk to the Richtis Gorge trailhead. Check the KTEL timetable for the most up-to-date schedules. From the Exo Mouliana bus stop, it is approximately 1.2km to the Lachanas bridge.

    From the parking area near Lachanas Bridge, begin the hike down into Richtis Gorge. Follow the well-marked trail, which is about 4 km to Richtis Beach. The hike takes 3-4 hours to complete. The trail is moderately challenging, involving stream crossings and rocky terrain. An entrance fee of €3 is payable in cash at a small wooden hut. If starting from Richtis Beach, follow the trail uphill towards the waterfall and Exo Mouliana.

The hike is approximately 4 kilometers long with a 350-meter elevation difference between the start and the beach. The trail ends at Richtis Beach, a secluded pebble beach with tamarisk trees and a stone fountain providing drinking water. There are two main hiking routes in Richtis Gorge: the Exo Mouliana to Richtis Beach route and the Circular Route. The Exo Mouliana to Richtis Beach route is the most popular and starts from the village of Exo Mouliana, taking hikers through the heart of the gorge and culminating at Richtis Beach. This route is 4 kilometers (about 2.5 miles) long and takes around 3 to 4 hours to complete, depending on one's pace. It offers moderate difficulty and features the stunning Richtis Waterfall as a highlight, along with lush vegetation and natural springs. The Circular Route starts and ends at the same point near Exo Mouliana, circling around the gorge. This route covers a distance of about 5 kilometers ( 3.1 miles) and takes 4-5 hours to complete. It also offers moderate difficulty and provides a more comprehensive view of the gorge's diverse landscapes, including cliffs, forests and streams.
