Car
If you're traveling by car, start from Reykjavík and take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading east. After approximately 110 kilometers, take the exit towards Route 47 to Hvolsvöllur. Continue on Route 1 for another 40 kilometers until you reach the town of Skógar. From Skógar, follow the signs to the Fimmvörðuháls trailhead, which is located about 4 kilometers up the hill. There is a parking area available at the trailhead, but please note that a parking fee may apply (around 1,000 ISK for the day).

Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavík to Skógar. The bus service, operated by Strætó, runs daily but check their schedule in advance for availability. Once you arrive in Skógar, you will need to walk approximately 4 kilometers up the hill to reach the Fimmvörðuháls trailhead. Be prepared for a steep walk, and ensure you have appropriate gear. The bus fare from Reykjavík to Skógar is approximately 4,500 ISK one way.

Hiking from Skógar
If you are already in Skógar or nearby, you can start your hike directly from the Skógafoss waterfall. Follow the path that leads up the hill past the waterfall. This route will lead you to the Fimmvörðuháls trail. The hike is steep and can take about 1-2 hours depending on your pace. Make sure to wear proper hiking shoes and carry water and snacks with you.
