History of Karnataka

The history of Karnataka dates back to the Mauryan Empire, around the 3rd century BCE. Emperor Ashoka’s reign saw the spread of Buddhism in the region, leaving behind stupas and pillars that mark the early historical significance of Karnataka. The arrival of Chandragupta Maurya, who later adopted Jainism, further enriched the cultural tapestry of the region.
After the decline of the Mauryan Empire, the Satavahanas came into power around the 1st century BCE. They played a crucial role in the history of Karnataka, fostering trade and cultural exchanges. Their rule saw the construction of several Buddhist monuments, including the famous Kanaganahalli stupa near Sannati.
The Chalukya dynasty, which emerged around the 6th century CE, is renowned for its architectural contributions. The rock-cut temples of Badami, the intricately carved structures in Pattadakal, and the iconic Virupaksha Temple in Hampi highlight their architectural prowess. The Chalukyas were instrumental in promoting Hinduism and patronizing art and literature.
The Hoysala Empire, which flourished between the 10th and 14th centuries, marked a golden era in Karnataka’s history.
