    Glengowla Mines is located off the N59, the main Galway City/Clifden road, approximately 3km west of Oughterard. From Oughterard, follow the N59 towards Clifden. After about 3km, you'll see signs for Glengowla Mines on your left. Turn left and follow the road for 300 meters to the mine entrance. Parking is available on site.

    The Bus Éireann route 419 from Galway stops at Glengowla. The bus departs from Lower Newcastle in Galway and arrives at Glengowla. The journey takes approximately 38 minutes. From the bus stop, it is a short walk to the mine entrance. A single fare costs between €5 and €9.

Glengowla Mines, located near Oughterard in County Galway, offers a unique glimpse into Ireland's industrial past and rural heritage. This well-preserved 19th-century mine, once a source of silver and lead, has been transformed into a captivating visitor attraction. Opened in 1851, Glengowla Mines operated for only 14 years, closing in 1865. During that time, miners extracted 390 tonnes of lead and 28 kilograms of silver, along with dolomite, quartz, and marble. Today, visitors can explore the underground chambers, marvel at the glittering veins of silver and lead pyrite, and discover rare octahedral fluorite crystals. The mine also features a blacksmith's shop and a circular powder house. Beyond the mine itself, Glengowla offers a variety of activities for the whole family. Enjoy sheepdog herding demonstrations, try your hand at traditional turf cutting, or take a leisurely stroll along the old Galway-Clifden railway line. The site also houses a museum with mining artifacts and geological exhibits, as well as a seismograph that's part of Ireland's National Seismic Network.
