Discover more about Riserva Naturale San Giuliano

Riserva Naturale San Giuliano is a captivating nature preserve in the Basilicata region of Italy, specifically within the Province of Matera. The reserve's history is intertwined with the creation of the artificial Lake San Giuliano between 1950 and 1957, formed by damming the Bradano River. This was part of a post-World War II effort aided by the Marshall Plan. Declared a wildlife protection area in 1976, the lake and its surroundings became a WWF Italy oasis in 1989. The reserve is recognized as a Site of Community Importance (SIC), a Special Protection Area (ZPS) for birdlife, and a RAMSAR site, marking it as a wetland of international importance. The protected area spans across the territories of Matera, Miglionico, and Grottole. The diverse habitats within the reserve host a wide array of plant and animal life. The lake itself is home to various fish species, while the surrounding vegetation includes poplars, willows, Aleppo pines and Mediterranean scrub. Birdwatchers can spot numerous species such as the black kite, red heron, white stork and various waterfowl. Mammals like otters, wild cats, foxes and wild boars also inhabit the area. In 2006, part of a Pleistocene whale skeleton was found on the lake's shores, adding a paleontological dimension to the reserve. Visitors can explore the reserve through nature trails, birdwatching excursions, and historical-environmental tours. An area is also available for picnics.
